Aircraft Brightwork

Brightwork is the bare polished aluminum on your aircraft. Leading edges, engine nacelles, exhaust stacks, prop spinners, wing root fairings, and on some airframes the entire lower fuselage. It is the first thing a passenger sees walking up to the aircraft and the first thing that gives away neglect.

What brightwork polishing actually involves

This is the most labor intensive service in aircraft detailing. There is no shortcut and anyone quoting you a fast number has not looked at the aircraft.

The work runs in stages, and every stage is decided by the condition of the metal in front of us:

Assessment. We look at oxidation depth, existing scratch patterns, and whether previous polishing left swirl or hologramming. We start with the least aggressive product that will do the job. Being aggressive when you do not need to be removes metal you never get back.

Cut. Heavy oxidation starts with a coarse compound and a rotary machine with wool. On lighter oxidation we skip this stage entirely and go straight to refining.

Refine. We step down through progressively finer compounds using a dual head orbital, which is the machine most aviation polishers run because it holds a consistent finish across curved panels without burning the metal.

Final mirror. The last pass is done with the finest polish available and a soft media, which is what produces the reflection people actually notice.

Seal. Bare polished aluminum starts oxidizing again the moment it is clean. We finish with a metal sealant so the work lasts months instead of weeks.

Masking and containment. Before any of it, painted surfaces, windows, static ports, pitot tubes, and antennas get masked. Polishing residue is black, it gets everywhere, and it does not belong on your paint or in your instruments.

Which aircraft need it

If your airframe has any polished aluminum, it needs brightwork attention. Common candidates in this region:

  • Gulfstream leading edges, nacelles, and exhaust

  • Bombardier Global and Challenger nacelles and wing components

  • Falcon leading edges and thrust reverser components

  • Citation and Learjet leading edges and spinners

  • Piston and turboprop spinners, cowlings, and wheel pants

We have polished everything from a G550 to single engine piston spinners. The process scales, the standard does not change.

How long it takes

Brightwork is measured in days, not hours.

A spinner and leading edges on a light aircraft can be a single day. Full brightwork on a large cabin jet that has been neglected for years is commonly five to ten days of work depending on the airframe and how far gone the metal is.

We are honest about this before you commit. If someone tells you they can bring a badly oxidized heavy jet back to mirror in two days, they are either skipping stages or they are about to disappoint you.

Where we work

We are mobile. We come to your hangar or your ramp.

Home base is Teterboro Airport and we cover the full tri state region, including Morristown, Essex County, Trenton Mercer, Linden, Westchester County, Republic, and the surrounding fields. We also travel for larger brightwork jobs, and we have done out of state work when the scope justifies it.

Brightwork typically requires hangar space and lift or platform access to reach upper surfaces. We will walk through access requirements with you before the job so there are no surprises on day one.

Why owners call us for this

Brightwork separates real detailers from wash crews. Most mobile operations will not touch it, because it takes equipment, product knowledge, and the patience to run a full compound progression instead of chasing a fast finish.

You get the owner on the aircraft. Not a rotating crew, not a subcontractor you have never met. We run lean on purpose, which means the person who quoted the job is the person doing the work and the person answering the phone afterward.

Frequently asked questions

How much does aircraft brightwork polishing cost? It depends entirely on aircraft size and the current condition of the metal. Light aircraft spinner and leading edge work starts well under a thousand dollars. Full brightwork on a large cabin jet runs into five figures because of the labor involved. See the starting ranges below and reach out for a firm quote.

How long does brightwork last? With a metal sealant applied and the aircraft hangared, expect three to six months before it begins to dull, longer with a maintenance polish schedule. Aircraft parked outside in coastal or industrial air will need attention sooner.

Will polishing damage my aircraft? Not when it is done correctly. The risk in brightwork is over aggressive product removing more metal than necessary, or compound residue getting into places it should not. We start with the least aggressive approach that works and we mask everything sensitive before we begin.

Can you polish painted surfaces too? Polishing bare metal and correcting paint are two different services. See our paint correction page if your paint is oxidized, swirled, or dull.

Do you need hangar space? For most brightwork jobs, yes. Weather, dust, and lighting all matter. We can discuss options if hangar space is limited.
